1. Hey Julie! Thank you for joining me today. When, why and how did you start selling printables on Etsy?

I started selling temporary tattoos on Etsy a few years back and saw some success in the bachelorette party niche. I quickly became overwhelmed with shipping out orders and was looking for something more passive.

That's when I discovered the concept of printables after meeting someone at a conference who had a six-figure business selling printables.

I switched to selling bachelorette party printables and never looked back to physical products!

2. What exactly are Printables and why is Etsy the best platform to sell them?

Printables are digital files that you make on your computer, upload to Etsy, and then customers can buy those files from you and download them on their computer.

They can print them at home or get them printed through an online printing service.

Etsy is the best platform to sell printables because it has millions of customers and very low start-up costs. It only costs 20 cents to list an item and then a very small fee when you actually sell that item.

3. What are some of the best selling printable templates that people download?

My best-selling template is a bachelorette party scavenger hunt that people can customize for their specific event. They can change the items to check off the list based on where they are going for the bachelorette.

My friend Cody is an expert at selling seasonal templates and his Valentine's day love coupons were an absolute hit last year! I highly recommend that people get started selling seasonal products because they do really well on Etsy.

We have Thanksgiving and Christmas upcoming and there are so many fun printables that people could make and that thousands of customers would buy if listed on Etsy. I know last year we had students in our course doing really well-making kids games and letters to Santa.

We were all so excited to hear about the sales that people were making in the lead-up to Christmas and Christmas Eve!

4. How much can you make selling Printables on Etsy?

Cody and I run an online course teaching people how to make printables and some of our students have really knocked it out of the park with this side hustle.

One of our top students, Rachel, has made over $150,000 since starting her printables business with us two years ago.

Another student, Sasha of YourFrugalFriend has four figure months consistently and now travels around the country in an RV with her family and does this full-time.

A third student, Kristy, of PrintItMomma, made over $12,000 in her first year!

It's totally possible to have a successful side hustle selling printables even if you have no experience to start. Most of our students are not bloggers and had no prior experience before starting.

5. How to make Printables to sell on Etsy? What are the steps someone needs to take to get started?

Printables are simply clipart and text placed in a cute fashion on a page.

Many students in the course make their printables with Canva which is easy to use, free, and doesn't require you to download anything.

The course covers everything from picking profitable ideas that will sell on Etsy to how to make the printables for the lowest cost possible.

We also have over-the-shoulder video tutorials that walk you through how we create some popular printables so that you know how to do it on your own.

The course is different than others out there because we really focus on finding popular printables that will sell using keyword research and looking up trends. Cody & I are bloggers and we have been building a six-figure business for years now using these strategies. We include them in the printables course and we think it gives our students an edge on Etsy.

I'm personally a Mom to a toddler who is always running around and I know what limited time Moms have each day. Before I was a work-at-home Mom, I was selling on Etsy and balancing my corporate job. That's why we include templates in the course so you can get started selling faster. Just tweak our designs to be your own and list them in your Etsy shop.

6. What are the skills someone needs in order to start selling printables on Etsy? Is it necessary to have a design background?

You don't need a design background and most students who join our course don't call themselves techy and are not graphic designers.

You really don't need those skills starting out and we teach you everything you need to know.

The best skill set to have is to be following what is trending on social media and be willing to give things a try. As for what is trending, you may notice that it's become popular in your neighborhood to make kids "boo baskets" for Halloween or leave "You've Been Booed" presents on people's doorsteps.

There are printables associated with those activities that are selling on Etsy and students in our course have made sales after listing them!

All of the students I mentioned before (Sasha, Kristy, and Rachel have 2+ kids each).

But they went at their own pace with the course and took breaks if they needed. Now they have successful online businesses selling printables on Etsy.

We do cover this in the course and it really depends on what printable you are selling. For example, I've sold printables for over $10 each in a hyper-specific niche where I was marketing the printable to entrepreneurs who can pay more per item. If I'm selling a seasonal printable I try to keep it around $5 or maybe a little under.

9. How many printables do you need in your Etsy shop before you get started?

You actually only need one printable to start an Etsy shop and we have had students make sales in their shop with only 1 item listed!

I think this is a creative outlet for Moms and I know personally I like playing around making printables on my computer for fun. Even better is that I can turn what I make into an income stream.

I recommend Moms just give it a try and do one small step each week. It can be overwhelming trying to make thousands of dollars overnight so just give yourself some time and in a few months, you'll be where you want to be.
